Four weeks tomorrow United ‘spring’ back into action with a trip to Stranraer for a friendly against the Scottish 3rd division club. Not a lot has happened since our last bulletin prior to the final game of the season at home to Newry City. We have signed just one player of note, namely Thomas Wray from Dungannon Swifts. Wray, according to reports, is a versatile player, who can slot in anywhere along the back four. All very good, but why the hell do we need him? We had seven players vying for four defensive positions last season, now we have eight. Is the United manager resigned to losing central defender and Captain Albert Watson to Linfield or has he decided to play with an eight man defence and hope to score from set-pieces and breakaways? We’re sure it hasn’t escaped the notice of United fans that no central midfield dynamo has been recruited, something that we have sadly lacked in the last few seasons. Nor are we it seems any nearer to signing a striker and it looks like we’ll be going with the same inept forward line of last season. With Ballymena man Nigel Worthington installed as the Norn Iron manager, what better time for United to spring to the fore once again. After five season’s of the ‘dithering’ Kenny Shiels, we at ‘Sport had hoped that Tommy Wright was the man to lead us out of the ‘wilderness’, but now we’re wondering if he’s just another ‘false prophet’ and we’ve had our fair share of those. So come on big Tam, the ball is at your toe, it’s time for you to stand up and be counted!
